Thanks again, Stepf. I've never been a fan of Rousseau, but your essay was enlightening. You seem to hold in common the will to unapologetically express what matters, and in your own way, invite people to spend a few moments in your head--to enjoy it... or suck it.
Thanks, Brian. Rousseau is one of my all-time favorites when it comes to "creative permission"—we definitely could all use the inspo from time to time.
I never knew about this guy but you’ve made me a convert. Big love to those trailblazers who carve out their own path, regardless if anyone follows the specifics. It’s like the pure act of witnessing them do their ting gives us permission to do our own.
Loving your work stepf, insanely quotable, as always 🔥
This is the best thing I've read all week. So thoughtfully written, so beautifully reflected. SO SO inspired and inspirational. Thank you for this. I'm now a Henri Rousseau stan and have a impactful reminder this week to go after creativity audaciously.
Wow this is great. I read some of your popular pieces, I didn’t know you did this kind of word portrait of artists. Looking forward to the others.
I remember wandering through museums in the east coast when I was discovering my own artistic sensibility or voice by discovering a love for paintings. And Rousseau was always there standing out as so unique amongst his contemporaries. I never got deep into his story so this is a lovely stroll with you. And it warms my heart how Picasso championed him. Thank you.
Wonderful piece - thank you Stepfanie! Curiosity can be the necessary fuel to get started, and staying focused on asking the ‘what if’ can help us not get frozen by the judgement of the establishment. Sometimes we need that creative license to get going, and deliberately nurturing our curiosity to be a little larger than our fear of failure can be literally all we need to keep going.. but as you say, stubbornness helps.
This is why I love substack. Reading this felt like walking through a museum.
Oh wow, I love that. There's really so much to explore with Rousseau, I feel like I hardly scratched the surface. Thanks for reading, John.
This beautifully written piece is a keeper. Love it.
Thanks so much Peggy. I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
Great stuff. Stay wild. Bare's up to you.
Bare, but never the bare minimum. Thanks, Richard.

LOL you get it! Thanks, Matt. Appreciate you reading, and glad to shed a little light on a side of Rousseau you might not have considered previously.
Inspirational. Bravo. Creatives need to hear stories like the one you told. Thank you.

I will come back to this again and again, so well explained✨ thank you!
